Navigating the High Seas: How to Prevent Motion Sickness on Your Cruise

Navigating the High Seas: How to Prevent Motion Sickness on Your Cruise

By: Hunter Keeling, Family Cruising Specialist

Embarking on a cruise is a dream for many, with the allure of the open sea, the adventure of exploring new destinations, and the joy of luxurious amenities all rolled into one grand experience. However, for some, the motion of the ocean can bring about a less welcome aspect of sea travel: motion sickness. If you're someone who loves the idea of a cruise but is wondering how to prevent sea sickness on a cruise ship, you're not alone. After disembarking from the Disney Wish with a party of 10, I've gathered a trove of insights and tips to help you stay comfortable and enjoy every moment of your oceanic journey (to get access to all my vacation tips, let’s start planning your cruise or all-inclusive vacation together today! Sour Candy: A Surprisingly Sweet Remedy

It may sound unconventional, but sour candy can be a sailor's best friend! The tartness is believed to help alleviate nausea, making it a must-have in your cruise kit. Pack a bag of your favorite sour treats to help keep queasiness at bay.

An Apple a Day

Green apples are another secret weapon against seasickness. Their natural qualities can help soothe your stomach. Don't hesitate to call room service for a fresh supply – it's one of the simplest, yet effective, remedies available right onboard.

Over-the-Counter Relief

For those who need something a little stronger, Meclizine or Dramamine can be lifesavers. These medications are typically available for free from dispensers outside the ship's health center. They're popular choices to counteract the effects of motion sickness, and for many, they work like a charm. We always recommend the non-drowsy version, but be sure to check with your doctor before you leave as they’ll know your medical history best.

Natural Aids: Sea Bands and Beyond

If you prefer to avoid medications, consider natural remedies like sea bands. These wristbands apply pressure to specific points on your wrist, which can help reduce feelings of nausea. Pack these in your luggage for a drug-free alternative.

Prescription-Strength Solutions

Before setting sail, have a chat with your primary care doctor about a scopolamine patch prescription. This small patch is placed behind your ear and releases medication steadily to help prevent seasickness symptoms.

Ginger: Your Flavorful First Mate

Never underestimate the power of ginger. A glass of ginger ale or ginger beer (despite the name, it's non-alcoholic) contains potent ginger, which is renowned for its stomach-settling properties. Swing by the bar or lounge on board and ask for a glass when you feel a wave of discomfort.

Location, Location, Location

Your cabin's location can significantly impact your experience with motion. Have a discussion with your travel professional to select a part of the ship known for experiencing the least amount of motion, increasing your chances of a smoother ride.

A Real-Life Illustration

On the last night aboard the Disney Wish, the power of the sea was on full display. The waves were so strong that the ocean spray reached all the way up to Deck 14 at Currents bar – an area where we were astounded to find remained open despite the conditions. The force of the waves even prevented us from enjoying our balcony on Deck 7, as the water was splashing into it.

Safety precautions were taken seriously, with certain decks being closed for guests' safety, such as Deck 4/5/6 open areas, as well as the forward pool area and lookout on Deck 11. Several guests in my party were feeling the impacts of the waves, but thankfully with my years of experience sailing on cruise ships I was able to help them all enjoy their last night onboard.

The Verdict from Our Voyage

In our group of ten, three individuals suffered significantly from motion sickness. However, they found relief through Meclizine and Dramamine, which allowed them to continue enjoying the voyage. Cruising should be nothing short of magical, and with these strategies, even those prone to motion sickness can have a delightful and memorable experience. Remember to prepare, pack accordingly, and you'll be well on your way to smooth sailing.
